Passion4Art Tip of the Day

What tools should an inker buy?

9 February 2010

Ink and Paper. Without the proper ink and proper paper, no matter how hard you try, You won't be able to draw really good inking lines, specially when using a quill as it actually scratches the paper. Normally I use Higgin's india ink or Higgin's Black Magic ink. The latter shows up really really black on the page. Paper is also very important and sometimes it is the source of headaches for a lot of inkers. Normally, paper is provided for by the company you are working for. Oftentimes the paper is real good. When I started inking for Wildstorm, the paper they sent over was really really good. After a while they downgraded and the paper wasn't as good as before. It created problems for me and it seems to other inkers as well. Scott Williams actually went out and scouted for good paper. My suggestion is that you go out and buy every piece of paper that you think you can use and try them out with different inks and see how they work together. In my local work here in the Philippines, I use a type of paper that is labeled as cartolina and is semi-glossy. It's tough to pencil on such a surface because it's a little too smooth. For inking however, I just love using it because my lines are real clear and free from blots.
