Artist's statement:

We constantly experience input of information in our minds. This may not necessarily be formed into conscious knowledge. Rather it is unformatted environmental impingements, all exposure to the elements and resulting psychical and physical changes from this.

Traveling in different places and changing environments enhances this input. You just have to be attentive to details, fleeting occurrences. Tales, folklore, other media events and old myths can all be helpfull. Insight, as well as providing an immeasurable source of information, consolidates everything together .

My task as an artist is to put these data on paper or onto whatever material I am working with at the moment.

Diverse mediums such as: printmaking, stage design for concert dance, performance art, installation, photography bond me as a creator with art.

The human body has always been a central interest to artists. Movement adds a new dimension to the human personality. This is why both in photography and performance art my subjects often are movement of the human body and dance. Though sometimes vestigial human presence in surrounding ambiance is enough.

I do not look purposefully for materials for my works, though often ponder on a subject for a long time. Materials are often found by themselves, unintentionally. This is why in my printmaking I favor so much collagraph, where I can incorporate natural, discarded and found objects which leave on paper bas-relief-like palpable indentations. Unpremeditated freely flowing lines, unexpected patterns are the rewards. I am fascinated with cloth for the same reason: creating spontaneous results with its folds and creases.

These techniques and the desire to be more precise in my work determine my way of usually working immediately, in situ, or site-specifically. That is to say, in a general environment, and not directly in nature as impressionists or Russian peredvizhniks did. Sometimes I finish pieces later but if too much time has passed I feel it very difficult to find the mood again.

I certainly have artistic influences, some good and some bad, retarding ones, but I favor abandonment as far as possible to the local idiom, at whatever place I am at the time.

PRESS RELEASE

DREAM AND REALITY/ LEVITATION AND GRAVITY.
.

Some thoughts on viewing the exhibition The TV Show.

Do glass chimes and slow but persistent heavy thuds take you away to the crest of a Himalayan peak and beyond to the celestial realms?
Then sit in front of a Blue Screen showing a waterfall of bowls of digital image substance pouring over you and then disappearing at the bottom, accompanied by ethereal sounds. As you concentrate on the screen, the rainbow-colored beetles in front of the carpet covered (disguised) TV suddenly seem to be crawling upwards.
Why are we so often in front of the TV? Do we have time for traditional values like religion, ritual and reflection? Has all-pervasive entertainment replaced them? Invented by Iouri Pestov, this Perpetual Meditative Entertainment device draws attention to these problems and at the same time reconciles entertainment and meditation.
Flight to the Heavens has always been one of the most sacred of man's desires. It figured prominently in ancient myths as it does in contemporary ones. As you sit in front of the Blue Screen your dreams fly together with Batman, Superman and Spiderman. Are you destined to detach from reality? Is unreality real? These inquiries may be especially important now, when our hopes fly so high.
In his performance as the Heroman, Mr. Pestov aspires as much to reach towards the skies as these heroes did, though in a more realistic way.
What encumbers our daily flights? Language, playing an important role in all aspects of life, is augmented by media. It can be guiding and misleading. The bureaucratic language of public notices strives to be both. The artist uses language in all his works in the exhibition. Another TV installation piece by the artist, The TV Revelation , has a drape in place of a screen. The instructions for use of the apparatus tempts you with many entries to open it and inspect the contents only to find your own reflection in the mirror. Well after all, man is at the core of everything man-made. The asterisk at the bottom of the
instructions advises you in case of difficulty in returning to usual life after the inspection to "please contact a local administrator or your doctor". Not surprisingly, many viewers start or scream in astonishment at the process.
There were two more of Iouri Pestov 's works in the exhibition, collagraphs, Eat drink and T Eat Drink, which dealt with advertisement, so often educating our tastes on the screen.
The exhibition, which was a host to fourteen other artists, was organized and juried by The Boon Project. It was on view in The Warehouse at 3075 21st Street in San Francisco from June 29th through July 25th. Names of the participating artists can be seen at: http://www.pearpod.com/tvshow2/.
Dedicated to the television, the theme of the exhibition can be surmised from the words of the organizers:
"From profane to the profound, we express the varieties of human experience symbolically through electronic communication and mass media. Yet these mediums and technologies themselves reconstruct our perceptions of culture, community, politics, economics, values, spirituality, gender and sexuality."
Iouri Pestov, having received a multifaceted art education, works in many mediums, including sculpture, installation, theater visualization, performance, printmaking, and photography. He has extensively exhibited and performed often while traveling throughout the world. In United States he was represented in such venues as Christensenheller Gallery in Oakland, California, and Exit Art Gallery in New York City. His works were shown in San Francisco on The French American Television. He has received awards and grants for his achievements in art.
