Painting in Provence, water colour courses

During the courses we try to instruct you on composition, colours, technique, three D and space, but the true goal is to help you liberate yourself from the exactness of regulations. To be an artist is first to be yourself.

 

Courses with an artist

Arlette Steenmans The courses are given by paintress Arlette Steenmans. She is born in Belgium in 1958 and studied Art in Antwerp (Belgium). She has received many awards for her paintings and her work hangs in many private collections all over the world.

The environment

The courses take place at La Remise in the little village of Puimichel, situated in the pre-Alps of the Provence in Southern France. There are not many places in the world where the contrasts are greater than in Provence.  The air is so clear, the houses so bright and the country so stark that one is nearly blinded. Until 1982 La Remise was a ruin of an old barn. Living conditions happily improved over the years. La Remise is much appreciated for its warm welcome and friendly informal atmosphere. For those that accept a simple residence, to be compared at youth hostel standards La Remise offers accomodation. A hotel is situated at 5 km from Puimichel.

A word about tools

Buy the very best that you can afford. It's tough enough learning to paint  without the additional handicap of poor quality materials.

  • Two or three of the best brushes will serve you better and longer than a fistfull of cheapies!
  • Good quality paints are : Winsor&Newton, Talens, Rembrandt,...
  • Mostly used is water colour paper on a block or per sheet (200g, 300g, 640g).
  • Don't forget some pencils, eraser, bowls, lots of rags and a sun hat.
  • A dozen of colours to start with will do (cadmium yellow, yellow ochre, permanent green light, olive green, cadmium oxide green, cadmium red, aliziran crimson, ultramarine blue, monastral blue, cerulean blue, burnt umber, sienna).

The prices

One week course: 3200FF (487,84 Euro). Any week all year long, just contact us and tell us which week you prefer!

One weekend course : on request 950FF (144,83 Euro)

These are the basic prices including full board accomodation at the artists' private home, La Remise. Other prices on request. Courses are mostly given in the morning from 9h till 13h but other hours can be arranged. La Remise is open all year.
