Years ago towards the end of a holiday break when boredom had settled in a school friend showed me how to develop and print a film. I've never decided if this was a blessing or a curse. I was ten at the time and within weeks I was doing D&P work for the neighbourhood, charging a few pence for contact prints produced under my bed. With the money I bought more materials. The idea of charging a little more and making a profit never occurred to me.

Since then I've worked in TV studios; as a cine-cameraman filming commercials and news footage; worked as a newspaper photographer; survived as a freelance photojournalist; and owned and operated an advertising and commercial studio.

Along the way I wrote a newspaper column, was admitted to a university degree (in photography & art theory) and made a few photographs for myself. I have now retired from commercial work to pursue self initiated projects.

Ernst Haas has talked about making two kinds of photographs. One to make a living and another, 'much closer' to himself, that he called 'the sanities'.
In that spirit I offer a selection of 'pictures that keep me sane'.
